Macro
Macro forces me to slow down. I find these shots in the garden, but just as often in the middle of a forest or on the edge of a stream. You can find something tiny worth taking a closer look at just about anywhere.
Getting that close changes how you see things. It makes you think about what the world looks like from a bug's-eye view.
Because the subjects are so small, it can be easier to control the light. Creating shade, or even adding light, feels a lot easier than it would with a larger subject. Now, if I could only control the wind!
It's not easy, honestly. There's a lot to learn to do it well, and I'm definitely still learning. But when I'm feeling burned out and like nothing around me is interesting, macro is the reminder that you can dig into the details of almost anything and find something worth photographing.
